#Hotmessshowcase Part. 1 Introducing Elus

Sooner or later I’m going to get around to discussing these hot mess showcases and competitions going on in this fair city of New York. You are most welcome to contribute your thoughts about the subject. Right now I want to share with you a video of an emcee named Elus. A Bronx native I’ve known for some time. My feelings were a bit hurt when I saw that he was performing at a #hotmessshowcase. I don’t dig ‘pay for play’ situations and anything that’s at the end of the day about paying some promoter’s rent.  Anyway, Elus is tight when it comes to lyricism+content+universality (I know that’s not a word, sue me…) he’s very intelligent.

We spoke about the whole performing at showcases thing. I expressed with him my feelings about it. Of course an audience is an audience, and I respect reaching out in whatever shape form or fashion you must. But I still wasn’t too thrilled about seeing someone who I feel deserves to rock for a captive audience rockin at a motley crew of a show to an inattentive crowd. Regardless, it is what it is.  I support Elus. I know what he’s capable of and I know what his dedication towards this craft is. So I’m going to do what I always do. Create awareness. If you dig what you hear or see. Even before you share this info. Let Elus know. Email. Tweet. That’s what artists really need. They need to know that what they’re doing is actually reaching folks and affecting them.

Check out Elus on Twitter.com/kindgenius

P.S. Elus is an engineer. Get at him if you need any recording work done.

Tzocon

I just got an email from this company that hits me up about music opps for commercials and what have you. There’s music being pitched for something. They need mid tempo hip hop tracks in the style of Jay-Z, Lil Wayne,  John Legend. they said, ‘Imagine a pro baseball star entering a club…’ I found something in a folder and sent it. Anyway, in that same folder, I found the outro to a future project with one of my folks Tzo.  We’ve discusssed doing an album called, ‘Tzocon’. The whole record is basically music made for the stage. Very thematic. For the most part I’ll be producing he’ll be performing.

Mid Week

There’s an X-Ecutioners show tonight featuring Sadat-X I’m finna hit up then after check out Alice’s Home Base event at Bob’s, finally! I gottah make sure to stay away from that Sugar Cafe. The red velvet cheesecake is ridiculous.

I have to say congratulations to Lizzy Allen for a successful first time event at Platform NYC in Bronx last night. It was actually really cool to be able to walk to an event for once and be back home at a reasonable hour. Lizzy is officially one of those people that makes things happen. I’m surely proud of her and will continue to support her movements thoroughly. www.myspace.com/emaphotography

Now here’s a random tune for you, if you’re listening…

Gif asked me to write a couple verses for this song he was working on earlier in the year called Behind These Doors. I think My direction was a little far off from what he was looking to do as our method for delivering stories told were absurdly different. But no worries. You can still hear this and perhaps one day I’ll record the second verse I wrote about the Jazz singer/musician.

verse one

my mind’s like choose your own adventure,
dead uh winter rockin speedo shorts,
life’s uh game sorta like water sports,
fyi they label me the crazy guy,
he be sleep walkin crazy high
like lucy with some diamonds in the sky was
just a picture drawn by a legendary
song writer’s son, i invite her in.. she’s homely
and she has no friends… i clean up well
actually, happily she’s much obliged,
warm greetings when she arrives…
i got an Anthony Robbins smile,
i am not your average kinda guy
savage by design.. she came by to watch some
flicks and have a little wine
i had something quiet different
brewin behind my eyes
so many picture…s
she looked up at the shrine and gasped
I came up from behind
and shived her in the spine…alas…
another willing specimen tagged
nother skull for my duffel bag
i am a monster,  monster, monster, monster

verse two

jazz singer trumpet, dreamer
was nice till i lost my finger
loss my eager, now i hit veins in vein
i easily catch fever, catch contacts
from more then refer man, in tune with
notes, old school i hit the ether man
the peepers scan the room
and i see ghost, what was once my life in
liner notes… the finer quotes
from a retro sober state..
before all the whores and grammy plates..
i upped the ante with planned mistakes off keyed ventures
summer time blues, far removed from warm red suns of winter
sun ra has entered, thelonious moments
alice in a wonderful coltrane wonderland
miles would be pleased by my pain, understand
i am just a man
the music is the hand that molds things controls thing
i wound’t switch those roles for anything
i regret nothin
last breath i wept
from the joy employed by my inner being
who’d have known that in the true clutches of death, that life i’d be seein
final magnum opus the never to be heard musical narcotic epiphany
